George House Trust Newsletter - 11/11/2025

Dear ,

We’re delighted to send George House Trust’s first Newsletter. We’ll be communicating with you monthly, keeping you up to date with everything happening at George House Trust and the exciting projects in the pipeline!

A Message from the Chief Executive

As the nights start to draw in, our gaze is fixed firmly on World AIDS Day on the 1st December, which will bring to an end the year of activity marking 40 years of George House Trust. It’s fair to say we’ve been Acting Up! all year, just like every year, but this year has been extra special.

It’s 40 years since we first took a helpline call at Manchester AIDS Line [the organisation that became George House Trust] and yet we’re still grappling with the impact of stigma and discrimination for people living with HIV today. My reflection on our 40th year is that there has been so much amazing work delivered by George House Trust’s team, yet there’s so much yet to do.

With this in mind, I hope that you’ll be joining us to ‘Paint the Town Red’ to mark World AIDS Day 2025 and resist, remember and show solidarity and of course, help raise the money that we need to continue to work for a world where HIV holds no one back.

Thanks for all your support, we really couldn’t do it without you.

Best wishes,

Darren

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GEORGE HOUSE TRUST

PAINT THE TOWN RED

We’re PAINTING THE TOWN RED! Our annual fundraising campaign launched on the 1st November and is running until World AIDS Day.

This year we’re asking you to resist, remember and show solidarity for people living with HIV by PAINTING THE TOWN RED and showing your support for people living with HIV and fundraising for George House Trust’s vital work.

We are working hard to raise £40 000 in our 40th year to help ensure a world where HIV holds no one back.

You can find out more about how you can support and what you can do to help us reach our target by downloading the information pack here.

Trustees’ Week

For Trustees’ Week, we wanted to say a huge thank you to our Board for their tireless commitment to George House Trust and their support for the charity’s development and growth.

We will also be holding an online recruitment event to learn about joining the Trustee Board on the 19th November at 5pm. Please email recruitment@ght.org.uk to sign-up.

World AIDS Day Vigil with PaSH

1st December, 18:15–19:00, Sackville Gardens

You are warmly invited to join us for this year’s World AIDS Day Vigil, where we will come together to remember, reflect, and stand in solidarity with all those affected by HIV.

The vigil will include candle-lighting and feature spoken contributions from community members, including those living with HIV and those working to support them. There will also be a performance by the Proud Chorus.

We hope to see you there.

Acting Up Exhibition

Our ‘Acting Up! exhibition at Manchester Central Library finishes in December. This is an incredible opportunity to learn more about the historical work which took place in Manchester to address HIV and the vital contributions the city of Manchester has made to the cause. Make sure to check it out before then if you haven’t yet!

What's Been Happening at George House Trust

At the start of the October, we had our fabulous Drag Ball which raised an incredible £46k for George House Trust and our work supporting people living with HIV. The event even received national media coverage in Pink News! Keep your eyes peeled for information about Drag Ball 2026 coming soon!

October was also Black History Month and we were pleased to recognise the important contributions of people of the global majority to society and to celebrate the cultural diversity we have here at George House Trust. At the start of the month, we had a fantastic event organised by our African Men’s Engagement Coordinator, Jeff. The evening brought the whole community together for performances, panels, a fashion show, music and food to celebrate Black History month and recognise the experiences of people of the global majority living with HIV. Later, our Women’s Support and Activities Officer, Vicky, held an ‘Show Up and Glow Up’ for our women’s support group featuring dance, some gorgeous cupcakes, food and bingo.

At the end of the month, we screened the iconic black queer film ‘Looking for Langston’. The film stars Ben Ellison who passed away 21 years ago from HIV-related illnesses and who was supported by George House Trust. The event included an introduction by Jackie Stacey from the University of Manchester before the screening. Following the film, there was a discussion with Esther Campbell, Ben’s sister, and Ben’s friends: Coronation Street star, Shelley King, and Doctor Who star, Donna Croll.

For International Day of the Older Person, our team in Liverpool hosted an afternoon tea and cruise on the river Mersey for our ageing well group in Liverpool. Later in the month, our team in Manchester held an intergenerational banquet with The Proud Trust. Bringing together our ageing well members and young people from The Proud Trust’s youth groups, the event saw the exchange of skills, knowledge and experience across the generations, teaching cooking and joining together for a three-course meal.

Director of Delivery and Impact, Alex, and Vicky attended Parliament to discuss our formula milk project with MPs and policymakers.  We also attended the Labour Party conference in Liverpool to talk to attending party members and MPs about our work and how the government can better support people living with HIV.

Alex and our Ageing Well project worker, Joanne, also attended the Cancer Care conference in Liverpool, utilising the opportunity to talk about better support for people living with both HIV and cancer, and our upcoming work on anal cancer for gay and bisexual men living with HIV.

Internally, our team has been undertaking Mental Health First Aid Training. We also recently came together for an all staff meeting as well as a Board development day as we develop George House Trust’s strategy for the future.

Thank you for your continued support of George House Trust,

All our love,

The George House Trust Team x
